Chelsea will reportedly make Renato Veiga their sixth summer signing after agreeing on a £13million package to sign the Basel player.
Veiga, who turns 21 before the end of this month, is said to have agreed personal terms as part of the deal. The Portugal under-21 international seems set to leave the Swiss side's training camp in Austria to complete the transfer.
These reports come as football.london understands Chelsea have agreed a £17million fee to sign Aaron Anselmino. The club have already announced the signings of Estevao Willian, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Marc Guiu, Omari Kellyman and Tosin Adarabioyo so far this summer.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that a deal is agreed for Veiga to join that list. Mainly a defensive midfielder for Basel last season, the Lisbon native primarily plays as a centre-back for the Portugal under-21s.
Veiga seems set to move for the second straight summer after only moving to Switzerland late last August from Sporting, where he came through the academy. The Portuguese club will reportedly receive 10% of the transfer fee after including a sell-on clause in the £4million deal done last summer.
But that was not the player's first move away from his homeland after spending the second half of the previous season on loan at Augsburg. Veiga was due to spend the whole year on loan, but the German club ended the deal early, with the move to Basel materialising a fortnight later.
He played 26 times for the club across all competitions, scoring two goals and assisting another as a defensive midfielder. Veiga also played multiple times further forward in midfield - even once in a more advanced role - and at centre-back. The player debuted for Portugal's under-21s in September and played every minute in all seven European U21 Championship qualifiers last season for his country at centre-back.
