Chelsea agree to trigger £21.3m release clause for a world-class player

Manchester United have been linked with several central defenders and one of them is Italian youngster, Riccardo Calafiori.

Apart from the Red Devils, the likes of Tottenham and Juventus have also been after the Bologna center half, who had a terrific last campaign under Thiago Motta

However, as per the latest reports in the Italian media, even Chelsea are pushing to lure Calafiori in the summer transfer window.

According to a story published by Corriere Torino yesterday (news image provided below), the Blues are ‘pressing’ to secure the 22-year-old defender.

The Turin based source have mentioned that Chelsea are ‘ready to fulfill’ the fee request of £21.3m (25 million euros) from Bologna to hire the services of Calafiori.

Motta is expected to join Juventus, who are studying the ‘right formula’ to beat the competition of ‘English clubs’ to sign the defender.

In the last campaign, the former Roma starlet started 26 games in the Serie A and helped his team keep 15 clean sheets.

Moreover, the 6 ft 1 boy was even productive in the attacking third as he directly contributed in 7 goals for Bologna, who finished 5th in the table and booked a place in the next season’s Champions League.

His top performances deservedly earned him a place in the Italian national squad for the European Championships and he may make his debut this month in Germany.

The Red Devils need long term replacements for Varane, Lindelof, Maguire and Evans and must not go without signing a central defender this summer, like they did last year.

In your view, should Man Utd push to beat Chelsea to the signing of Calafiori?
