Chelsea are currently nine points off the top four in the Premier League standings
Mauricio Pochettino's side have now won each of their last three Premier League matches to continue their climb up the Premier League table in search of a European place. The Blues are nine points adrift of Tottenham Hotspur in fourth and will be giving their all to close this gap in the coming months. There are still concerns over the current Chelsea squad, however, which could hold the team back in their pursuit of a Champions League spot. A main worry continues to be the lack of attacking firepower in the team, with a lack of goals proving to be a problem all season.
One part of the pitch that seems to be in order is midfield, which was further upgraded in the summer after the signings of Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia and Lesley Ugochukwu. Caicedo has partnered Enzo Fernandez in this department more often than not, with Conor Gallagher impressing as the third man.
Come the end of the current campaign, Pochettino could add one additional name to the mix to complete his dream midfield: Bruno Guimaraes. The Brazilian has shone in the Premier League since signing for Newcastle United two years ago and could be available to major European clubs this summer.
Newcastle recently reported losses of £73.4million when announcing their latest financial results, ensuring there is now the real possibility the Magpies may be forced to sell one of their prized assets in order to ease concerns over Financial Fair Play. Guimaraes could be one player sacrificed by the club as they attempt to raise funds during the summer transfer window, as much as they would love to keep him as part of their first-team squad.
A report from AS on the player's future has indicated the former Lyon star "agreed" to a release clause in his contract worth €115million (£98m), which is payable in three instalments of €38m (£32m). The article adds Guimaraes is one of the players the Newcastle board have chosen to help them "settle accounts" and there is no restriction on Premier League teams activating his exit valuation.
Chelsea are said to be interested in the 26-year-old, along with Liverpool and Barcelona. Paris Saint-Germain are also reportedly admirers and are "expected to return to attack again next summer".
Were Chelsea to strike a deal, it is highly likely another midfielder will have to be sold in order to ease Financial Fair Play concerns. Gallagher, who has been mentioned as a possible target for Tottenham Hotspur, is out of contract at the end of next season and is yet to be offered a new deal.
Another reason Gallagher may be moved on relates to the fact selling academy players helps Chelsea’s FFP situation as money received from such sales is registered as pure profit.
