Chelsea have completed two signings which were overpriced

Steve Sidwell has delivered a pretty firm assessment on Chelsea duo Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.

There’s a huge expectation this season on Chelsea’s midfield, especially with Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez in the centre of the park.

Caicedo has all eyes on him because of his mega £115m transfer (Sky Sports) in the summer from Brighton to the Blues. Similarly, Fernandez arrived at Stamford Bridge from Benfica back in January in a deal worth £106.8m (Sky Sports).

Both aged 22, there’s a fair belief that the central midfielders should be dominating most games in the Premier League. We’ve not really seen that yet in the last few months. You could even argue that teammate Conor Gallagher is outshining both in Chelsea’s midfield.

Speaking via The Peter Crouch podcast, Steve Sidwell has suggested that both Caicedo and Fernandez are overpriced. He think the pair look more like £30 million players right now based on their current form.

Sidwell said: “I look at it and I think with Chelsea the inflated prices have put more pressure on individuals. Caicedo is not a £100 million player. He’s a very good player but he’s not £100 million. Enzo, again, £100 million – he’s not a £100million player. Your two central midfielder players cost £200 million. They are playing as if they are worth £30 million.”

Moises Ca icedo and Enzo Fernandez overpriced

We’ll agree that Caicedo and Fernandez don’t look like £100m players right now, but let’s remember they’re young and on long-term contracts in West London.

We’re still optimistic about the quality and long-term impact of the South American stars.

Our prediction is that the introduction of Romeo Lavia, who’s nearly back from injury, will be a massive boost for Chelsea’s midfield conundrum. He’s got all the tools to work as the deepest midfielder in a No 6 position, while Caicedo and Fernandez roam in box-to-box roles.
