Chelsea agree to sign €22m defender as Thiago Silva's permanent replacement

All the latest Chelsea transfer news as another central defender is tipped to make a move to Stamford Bridge

Chelsea are reportedly interested in Torino defender Alessandro Buongiorno.

Chelsea are preparing for the January transfer window ahead of a vital month for Mauricio Pochettino. The Blues spent over £400million in the summer to bring the likes of Moises Caicedo, Cole Palmer and Christopher Nkunku to the club.

More players could be signed in the winter with a number of positions expected to be monitored. A new centre-forward and defender has been tipped so far and according to reports in Italy, Torino's Alessandro Buongiorno is on their radar.

Calciomercato have reported that the Blues and Juventus have made enquiries about signing the centre-back. It's understood that he will cost around £30million.

Buongiorno, 24, has been a regular in the Torino side since returning from his loan spell at Trapani in 2020. A left-footed centre-back, Buongiorno's current contract in Italy is due to expire in 2028.

With that being said, football.london takes a look at Chelsea's defensive options and the January transfer window.

Does Pochettino want another defender?

Currently speaking, Chelsea possess a long list of options at centre-back: Levi Colwill, Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah, Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr. Under-21s star Alfie Gilchrist has also made it onto the bench this season too.

However, with Silva's contract expiring at the end of the season and Chalobah almost expected to leave the club in the summer, a new face could be thrown into the mix this winter.

Colwill has frequently been used at left-back this season while Sarr has been left out by Pochettino. And Badiashile has attracted interest from France, though it's not expected that he'll be allowed to leave.

How much will Buongiorno cost?

According to CIES Football Observatory, the defender is valued at only €20million (£17.3m). Transfermarkt have him slightly more expensive at €22million (£19m).
