Chelsea agree to pay $110m to sign a world-class player - Report from Spain

Real Madrid received and rejected a $110 million (€100 million) offer for their forward Rodrygo last summer, according to OK Diario.

The Brazilian, who Los Blancos bought from boyhood club Santos for a reported (€45 million) in 2018 before he became of adult age, was an "express request" from Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Impressed with the youngster's game, the Argentine and former-Paris Saint-Germain coach was confident that Rodrygo would fit into game plan perfectly because of his work ethic, knack of unbalancing defenses and goalscoring efforts.

Regardless of who has been their coach, the West Londoners have also had a good look at Rodrygo up close in the Champions League. They have met his Madrid side three times in the UCL knockout phases over the past three seasons, with Rodrygo scoring a double that knocked them out at the quarter-final stage in April and an aggregate equalizer off the bench in spring 2022 which forced extra time and an eventual victory for the 14-time winners of the competition.

Real Madrid ultimately rejected the proposal from moneyed Chelsea, however, who were overtaken by a consortium led by American businessman Todd Boehly for $5.4 billion ($4.25 billion) when former owner Roman Abramovich was forced to sell up thanks to UK sanctions stemming from his alleged connection to Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Furthermore, according to OK Diario, Los Blancos, "have also not wanted to listen to the clubs that have enquired about the Brazilian in recent months".

This might have seemed unwise as Rodrygo started the season in a slump and went on an 881 minute goal drought from the opening day of the campaign in August to late October.

Since then, however, he has repaid the faith shown in him by head coach Carlo Ancelotti and the club by embarking on a nine goal, five assist glut which has helped Madrid finish 2023 atop of the La Liga table.

The upturn in fortunes might have also been triggered by Rodrygo signing a five-year contract extension that runs until mid-2028.

given his current form as Madrid battle for four trophies from now until the end of 2023/2024, the club from the capital look certain to turn down any other proposals that might arise in the winter or summer.
