"I was wrong, it's a mistake leaving Chelsea" - Confession after leaving Stamford Bridge

Former Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has now claimed he believes he made a mistake when he left the club in 2019.

The Lazio boss told Repubblica that he regrets the decision he made to leave England, even if he did not have the most enjoyable spell at Stamford Bridge.

Sarri lasted just one season at Chelsea, however it is certainly fair to say he made an impact in the short period of time he was here.

He picked up the Europa League in his final game in charge, which so far proves to be the first and only honour he has won in his managerial career.

There was a large reliance on Eden Hazard from his side, with him enjoying arguably the best period of his career before he left for Real Madrid.

He was replaced by Frank Lampard for his first stint in charge, which it is fair to say went a lot better than his caretaker spell at the end of last season.

Sarri regrets leaving England

While Sarri’s time came to a pretty abrupt end, he believes leaving England for Italy was a big mistake

He said: “At Chelsea I had a hard time in a place where no coach could last two years. But then in the last few months I had fun and I was wrong to want to leave. Not so much Chelsea, who wanted to keep me, but England. Going back to Italy was a mistake.”

Supporters will have plenty of fond memories of that season, highlighted by the aforementioned victory over Arsenal in the Europa League final.

There will however be some less positive memories, with them falling short in the League Cup final at Wembley to Manchester City.

Here, Kepa Arrizabalaga left the Italian fuming after he refused to be substituted in the final moments before the penalty shootout for Willy Caballero.
