It looks like a big-name striker could be coming to Chelsea soon in a potential boost to Mauricio Pochettino.
Nicolas Jackson is on fire right now for Chelsea, but the Blues continue to be linked with new forwards, including Napoli’s Victor Osimhen. And now journalist Simon Phillips has claimed on his Substack that he has “been told” that Chelsea have made contact with Osimhen’s agent.
Osimhen recently told Blues legend John Obi Mikel that he had a Chelsea shirt when he was younger.
The Nigerian has started the season well for Napoli, scoring six goals in eight Serie A appearances.
If Chelsea have spoken to Osimhen’s agent, as Phillips has claimed on Si Phillips Talks Chelsea, then that is a massive development.
The Blues could be a step closer to bringing in an elite No.9, with AS Monaco’s Folarin Balogun recently hailing Osimhen as a “world-class striker” in an interview with ESPN
There is still some time until the January transfer window opens, while a player of Osimhen’s importance may not be sold until next summer.
It means Jackson still has the opportunity to show Chelsea that perhaps they do not need another centre-forward.
The Senegal international scored last time out against Manchester City and netted a hat-trick versus Tottenham Hotspur. If he can prove those goals were no fluke, then it would give Chelsea something to seriously think about in the new year.
If Jackson cannot, though, then you would expect the club to go out and buy a striker in January or next summer, if they have not decided to already. They know, to get better, Pochettino needs a reliable goalscorer who is going find the back of the net week in, week out. Is it going to be Jackson, Osimhen or someone else? Only time will tell.
