Arsenal are among the clubs waiting in the wings to sign Ecuador World Cup star Piero Hincapie, according to reports.

Hincapie impressed for Ecuador in Qatar and has become one of the most in-demand young defenders on the continent. The 20-year-old has impressed for Bayer Leverkusen and there is said to be a host of clubs interested.

And according to Calciomercato, Arsenal are one of them. The Gunners are said to be in the mix alongside north London rivals Tottenham, while a host of Italian clubs such as Inter and Roma are also mentioned.

Arsenal’s interest in Hincapie comes as reports have previously claimed Chelsea manager Graham Potter is also keen on signing him. Potter had a record of landing South American players at Brighton and is likely to have had Hincapie on his radar while at the AMEX.

For Arsenal, it is no surprise to see them interested. Born in 2002, Hincapie fits the mold of recent signings made by the Gunners. Under Edu and Mikel Arteta, the club are building for the future and have had success themselves in exploring the South American market.

After a good World Cup with Ecuador, it is little wonder Hincapie is now a man in demand.

If the World Cup was Hincapie’s audition for a big move then he did little wrong really. He played well for Ecuador and showed his class in the group stages at times.

Of course, they didn’t get as far as they’d have liked. But Hincapie did enough to show just why the likes of Arsenal and more want him.

The report from CM values him around the £25m mark. And in today’s market, you have to say that could be good value for money.
