Chelsea unwilling to spend £150million to sign Erling Haaland in this summer’s transfer window, according to reports. The Borussia Dortmund striker is Thomas Tuchel’s top target. But Manchester United are also admirers of the Norway international, who they’re planning to pursue next year.
Chelsea won the Champions League under Tuchel last term, while also reaching the final of the FA Cup and finishing fourth in the Premier League table.
But though the Blues are a side very much on the up, they’re still eyeing a summer spending spree nonetheless.
Chelsea are big admirers of Haaland, who scored 40 goals for Dortmund across all competitions last term – and also finished as the Champions League’s top scorer.
However, while that’s the case, the Evening Standard have now delivered a negative update when it comes to the 20-year-old.
It’s stated that Chelsea are unwilling to pay Dortmund’s asking price for Haaland, with the Bundesliga giants wanting £150m to let him go.
That would make the former Red Bull Salzburg star the costliest recruit in the club’s entire history, dwarfing the £72m fees spent on Kai Havertz and Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Manchester United are also admirers of Haaland.
But it’s stated the Red Devils intend to go after the striker in 12 months time, with Jadon Sancho instead their priority.
A deal to take Sancho to Old Trafford is nearing completion, with the 21-year-old Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s main aim for the summer window.
Haaland had initially been lined up by the Red Devils but, in the wake of Edinson Cavani’s decision to stay for another year, have put interest in the Dortmund star on the backburner for the time being.
Chelsea are set to open talks with N’Golo Kante over a new contract, with Tuchel helping the France international get back to his bruising best.
And they’re also hoping to land Declan Rice from West Ham to partner the 2018 World Cup winner, though feel West Ham may complicate their attempts to strike a deal.
As well as Haaland, Chelsea have two alternatives lined up.
One is Romelu Lukaku, despite the Belgium international making it clear he’s happy at Inter Milan in the wake of their Serie A title triumph.
And another is Tottenham’s Harry Kane, who is also in Manchester City’s sights as they look to win the Champions League next term.
Speaking earlier this year, Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness expressed a belief that Haaland would be perfect for Tuchel’s side.
“Other than having an out and out 25-30 goals a season man, Chelsea are pretty near the finished article,” he said.
“If they get that, they’ll be very dangerous. If they can land one in the summer you never know.
“No one is talking about them for the guy at Dortmund, (Erling) Haaland. Would they have a go there?
“I’m sure the owner would have a go if he saw any encouragement this year that they could be the team to win the big trophies, his eyes are only on the league and the Champions League, Roman Abramovich.
“I think he would go again (and spend big for Haaland).”
And former Chelsea star Wayne Bridge also thinks the club need a striker if they’re to build on their Champions League triumph.
Chelsea are ready to open N’Golo Kante contract talks
“It’s a bit of a no-brainer: an out-and-out goal scorer,” he said.
“I keep saying Timo’s [Werner] going to become good and I predicted him to score a few goals at the Euros, but it has just not clicked for him so far.
“He’s shown glimpses and done well in games particularly with assists – but he’s not scoring goals, which is what he was signed to do.
“There’s been talk of [Erling] Haaland and [Harry] Kane. I’d love to see Kane at Chelsea but whether that’ll ever happen I’m not sure.
“There might be a few options for them but for me it’s figuring out who we can get and who’s going to be an out-and-out goal scorer.”
