Erling Haaland is the striker that every club wants this summer in the transfer window and, of course, he has been linked with a big-money move to Chelsea.
Not that the Norwegian would come cheap – £150million if you believe the reports – but for a club with the financial might of the Blues then it’s a deal that can be done.
Spending £150million on a striker that will probably guarantee you a huge return in goals is something that Roman Abramovich won’t sniff at. Whether Haaland’s club, Borussia Dortmund, are willing to let him go though is a different thing entirely.
With Man Utd seemingly closing in on a swoop for Jadon Sancho, Dortmund will not want to lose two of their brightest stars in one transfer window.
The European Champions have that cache behind them now when making deals but even so, it’s not a guarantee you will get a player you want. That is why there are alternatives.
The likes of Patson Daka, Romelu Lukaku and Alexander Isak have all been linked with the Blues should a move for Haaland fail. Harry Kane wants to leave Spurs but if he will end up anywhere, it’s like to be Man City.
Will fans of the reigning European Champions will want to see Tuchel’s striker department added to with quality and not quantity, no matter what the price may be, there are some cheaper deals the club could potentially make not as a replacement for Haaland, but maybe to add to him.
Despite Olivier Giroud penning a one-year extension at the club earlier this summer, that is no guarantee that he will remain a Blues player come August 14 and the new season. The Frenchman now has some residual value if Chelsea decide to let him go for a fee.
Timo Werner and Kai Havertz had indifferent first seasons in the top flight but Havertz has shown green shoots of huge progress in the latter weeks of the season and has carried it into the EURO 2020 championship as well.
Chelsea signed Havertz and Timo Werner from Germany last summer and there is another player currently plying his trade on the continent that has been rumoured to be of interest to Premier League clubs – Andre Silva.
The Portuguese frontman has had a fine couple of seasons with Eintracht Frankfurt, having been brought to the club when the German side sold Sebastien Haller to West Ham, who didn’t make the grade and is now with Ajax.
Silva netted 28 goals in the Bundesliga last season, only Robert Lewandowski scored more as he plundered a ridiculous 41 goals to break the all-time Bundesliga record.
In 2020/21, Silva hit the target with 49.5% of his shots, as per FBRef, with 53 of his 107 shots hitting the target.
Silva also hit 12 the season before for Frankfurt to make his mark as one of the top tier frontmen in the German game.
When asked how much he himself thought he was worth, the Portuguese striker responded : “Around 105million? I’m kidding. I think I heard £30million somewhere. When we sell our merchandise, we always increase the value a little bit.
“Things are as they are and, whatever happens around us, the important thing is to look at me and what I can do.”
As well as addressing how much he thought he was worth, the striker also addressed his future and the links with a move to the Premier League.
“I’ve heard rumours, but that is it. Rumours are rumours,” Silva added.
“It’s something that gives me more motivation to work, as it’s a sign that what I have accomplished has borne fruit and the path has been good.”
